En busca del trabajo perdido (y de una sociología capaz de encontrarlo)

JOURNAL:  Estudios sociológicos
AUTHORS:   Juan José Castillo

SUMMARY:  This text continues a reflection on the limits of Sociology —the sociology of labor, in our case—, which oscillates between, on the one hand, the triviality of reproducing an ideology of more market, more wear and crumb-like labor force, and, on the other, the dominating lines of the Social Science Citation Index, which sings odes to jut-in-time systems, flexible and light production, and phone work. Social complexity blurrs and hides the contours of what used to be (?) clear wage-work: jobs, engraved within such a society, are today among the misteries of what up to now was non-labor's exclusive space, or socially and geographically scattered, although probably more centralized than ever; in any case, they are invisible to a theoretically orphaned look, which does not strive to renew its conceptual and methodological instruments.

CULTURAL REFERENCE:  Raiders of the Lost Ark (En busca del arca perdida) is a 1981 American adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg. It was executive produced by George Lucas. Starring Harrison Ford, it was the first installment in the Indiana Jones film franchise to be released, though it is the second in internal chronological order. It pits Indiana Jones (Ford) against a group of Nazis who are searching for the Ark of the Covenant, which Adolf Hitler believes will make his army invincible.

JOURNAL:  Sociología del Trabajo: Revista Cuatrimestral de Empleo, Trabajo y Sociedad
AUTHORS:  Catherine Teiger

CULTURAL REFERENCE: That Obscure Object of Desire, released in 1977, was the final film directed by Luis Buñuel. Set in Spain and France against the backdrop of aterrorist insurgency, the film tells the story of an aging Frenchman who falls in love with a young Spanish woman who repeatedly frustrates his romantic and sexual desires.

JOURNAL:  Journal of Social and Personal Relationships
AUTHORS:  Sarah Woods, Nathaniel Lambert, Preston Brown, Frank Fincham & Ross May

SUMMARY:  The positive impact of active–constructive responding (i.e., showing enthusiasm) to the sharing of good news (i.e., capitalization attempts) on relationship well-being is well documented. The objective of this research was to determine whether individuals in a close relationship benefit from training to increase active–constructive responding to partner capitalization attempts and to document its impact on relationship well-being. Compared with a joint activity control group, individuals who received training in providing active–constructive responses perceived a greater amount of gratitude from their study partner and perceived their study partner as having greater relationship satisfaction; however, there were no significant differences in reported relationship satisfaction or gratitude expression. Gratitude receipt from a study partner mediated the relationship between experimental condition and perceived study partner relationship satisfaction.

CULTURAL REFERENCE: "I'm So Excited" is a song performed by American recording artists The Pointer Sisters. Jointly written and composed by The Pointer Sisters in collaboration with Trevor Lawrence, it was originally released in 1982 and saw a re-release in 1984. It is considered to be the group's signature song.

JOURNAL:  Journal of Urban Economics
AUTHORS:

  • Diego Puga &
  • Matthew A. Turner

  • SUMMARY:  We study the relationship between urban sprawl and obesity. Using data that tracks individuals over time, we find no evidence that urban sprawl causes obesity. We show that previous findings of a positive relationship most likely reflect a failure to properly control for the fact the individuals who are more likely to be obese choose to live in more sprawling neighborhoods. Our results indicate that current interest in changing the built environment to counter the rise in obesity is misguided.

CULTURAL REFERENCE: Fat City is a 1972 American neo-noir boxing drama film directed by John Huston. The picture stars Stacy Keach, Jeff Bridges, and Susan Tyrrell. One of Huston's later films, it is based on the boxing novel Fat City (1969) by Leonard Gardner, who also wrote the screenplay. Tyrrell received an Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination as the alcoholic, world weary Oma.

    JOURNAL: Appetite
AUTHORS:  C. Alix Timko, Julia M. Hormes, Janice Chubsk

SUMMARY:  Adherence to a vegetarian diet has been hypothesized to be a factor in the onset and maintenance of disordered eating behavior; however, evidence to support this assumption has been largely mixed. The two studies presented here sought to address the causes of inconsistent findings in previous research, including: small samples of true vegetarians, lack of appropriate operational definitions of “vegetarianism”, and uncertainty about the appropriateness of existing assessments of eating behaviors for semi-vegetarians.

CULTURAL REFERENCE: To Tell the Truth is an American television panel game show created by Bob Stewart and produced by Goodson-Todman Productions that has aired in various forms since 1956.  Three challengers are introduced, all claiming to be the central character. The panelists are each given a period of time to question the challengers. After questioning is complete, each member of the panel votes on which of the challengers they believe to be the central character. Once the votes are in, the host asks, "Will the real [person's name] please stand up?"
