JOURNAL:  Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society
AUTHORS: Reto Stauffer, Georg J. Mayr, Markus Dabernig and Achim Zeileis.
SUMMARY:  Results of many atmospheric science applications are processed graphically. Visualizations are a powerful tool to display and communicate data. However, to create effective figures, a wide scope of challenges has to be considered. The guidelines and examples should help readers to switch over to the alternative HCL color model, which will result in a greatly improved quality and readability of visualized atmospheric science data for research, teaching, and communication of results to society.

CULTURAL REFERENCE:  Over the Rainbow" is a ballad written for the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. On the album Facing Future (1993), Israel Kamakawiwo'ole included "Over the Rainbow" in a ukulele medley with "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong.

JOURNAL:  Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment
AUTHORS: Aníbal Pauchard , Christoph Kueffer , Hansjörg Dietz, Curtis C Daehler,  Jake Alexander,  Peter J Edwards,  José Ramón Arévalo,  Lohengrin A Cavieres,  Antoine Guisan,  Sylvia Haider,  Gabi Jakobs,  Keith McDougall,  Constance I Millar,  Bridgett J Naylor,  Catherine G Parks,  Lisa J Rew,  Tim Seipel.
SUMMARY:  Here, we discuss four main drivers that shape plant invasions into high‐elevation habitats: (1) the (pre‐)adaptation of non‐native species to abiotic conditions, (2) natural and anthropogenic disturbances, (3) biotic resistance of the established communities, and (4) propagule pressure. We propose a comprehensive research agenda for tackling the problem of plant invasions into mountain ecosystems, including documentation of mountain invasion patterns at multiple scales, experimental studies, and an assessment of the impacts of non‐native species in these systems. The threat posed to high‐elevation biodiversity by invasive plant species is likely to increase because of globalization and climate change.

CULTURAL REFERENCE:  "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" is an R&B/soul song written by Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson in 1966. The composition was first successful as a 1967 hit single recorded by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, becoming a hit again in 1970 when recorded by former Supremes frontwoman Diana Ross.

Picture
JOURNAL:  Sociological methodology
AUTHORS: Gwen Sharp and Emily Kremer
SUMMARY:  This paper discusses how gender dynamics may put female researchers at risk of harassment or even violence from participants, research assistants, or bystanders whenn conducting field work. Based on a review of the existing literature on fieldwork safety, as well as the authors' own experiences interviewing male participants, the authors argue that attention to protecting subjects of research has led the social science community to largely igore the possibility that in some cases, researchers themselves may be at risk.

JOURNAL:  Military Law Review
AUTHORS: Major Jeffrey L. Spears
SUMMARY: Germany and Japan along with their lesser Axis Allies waged a war of conquest that spread to all of the populated continents. The United States and her Allies found themselves in a struggle for national survival in the face of a powerful coalition bent on world conquest. Though all wars expose its participants to unique horrors, World War II brought the world atrocities of historic proportions. Yet, today it is difficult to imagine a modern war between the United States, Germany and Japan.

Aggression and group size in domesticated pigs, Sus scrofa: ‘when the winner takes it all and the loser is standing small’

JOURNAL:  Animal Behaviour
AUTHORS: I.L.Andersen, E.Nævdal, M.Bakken, K.E.Bøe
SUMMARY: We developed a theoretical model that describes how aggression among unacquainted pigs is a function of group size. As the number of potential competitors increases, more individuals will benefit from not getting involved in costly fights. To verify predictions from this model, we compared aggression among unacquainted, weaned pigs in three group sizes (6, 12 and 24 pigs). There were significantly more fights per individual in groups of six and 12 pigs than in groups of 24 pigs, and the proportion of pigs not participating in fights was significantly higher in the largest group. We conclude that pigs are able to alter their behaviour according to how the actual competitive situation changes with group size.

CULTURAL REFERENCE:  "The Winner Takes It All" is a song recorded by the Swedish pop group ABBA. It is a ballad in the key of F-sharp major, reflecting the end of a romance.

Mamma Mia: A Feasibility Study of a Web-Based Intervention to Reduce the Risk of Postpartum Depression and Enhance Subjective Well-Being

JOURNAL:  JMIR Research Protocols
AUTHORS: Silje Marie Haga, Filip Drozd, Håvar Brendryen,  Kari Slinning
SUMMARY: Currently, 10-15% of women giving birth suffer from symptoms of postpartum depression. Due to a lack of knowledge of this condition and the stigma associated with it, as well as few treatment options, a large proportion of postpartum women with depression remain untreated. Internet-based interventions have been found effective in treating depression, anxiety, phobias, and addictions. Hence, we developed such program (“Mamma Mia”) with the aim of reducing the risk for postpartum depression and enhance subjective well-being. Mamma Mia is based on positive psychology, metacognitive therapy, and couples therapy. It starts in gestational week 22, and lasts until 6 months after birth. During pregnancy, Mamma Mia is delivered weekly (every Monday). After birth, Mamma Mia is delivered three times per week for six weeks. The remaining weeks, the program is delivered more sporadically. In total, Mamma Mia consists of 44 sessions. The program is individualized, interactive, and tunneled (ie, the user is guided through the program in a pre-determined manner).

CULTURAL REFERENCE: "Mamma Mia" is a song recorded by the Swedish pop group ABBA. The song's name is derived from Italian, where it is an interjection used in situations of surprise, anguish, or excitement.

The article illustrates the challenges inherent in supporting cross-cultural learning within diverse cohorts and explores the use of reflective learning strategies as a means of promoting cross-cultural understanding. It concludes with a discussion about the positioning of university curricula as international spaces within local contexts and questions the degree to which implicit pedagogical norms support inclusivity.

CULTURAL REFERENCE: "Knowing Me, Knowing You" is a hit single recorded by Swedish pop group ABBA. The song is featured on the group's album Arrival, and also on the compilation Gold: Greatest Hits.

JOURNAL:  Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry
AUTHORS: R. Rieger, K. Müllen
SUMMARY: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are popular research subjects due to their high stability, their rigid planar structure, and their characteristic optical spectra. The recent discovery of graphene, which can be regarded as giant PAH, has further stimulated the interest in this area. For this reason, the relationship between the geometric and electronic structure and the optical spectra of PAHs are reviewed, pointing out the versatile properties of this class of molecules. The presented research results shall encourage developments of new PAH structures to exploit novel materials properties.
